Let's assume the Democrats are able to give Geithner the power he wants...do they realize that when the next Republican gets into office & appoints their Treasury Secretary that he'll have that same power?! Or will they enact a law that says this new power is only good for this current administration? I'd guess most of them would cringe at the thought of giving this power to Bush's administration!
