i never understood what the hard on was aussies have for the united states. they'll read a few ariticles, watch a few movies, then feel qualified to lecture americans on our political system. believe me oz is no brain trust. just an island with funny animals nice whether and funny accents. that being said, you're dead on wrt to newt gingrich. don't bloat aussie don, i think you just got lucky with ur analysis this time.

we are carbon based life forms but don't breathe carbon, so a silicon based life form wouldn't necessarily breath silicon, the could breathe oxygen.

you don't understand basic chemistry, burning coal completely will produce CO2 and water, so clean burning coal means no particulates and heavy metals like Hg and U, it does not ean no CO2.

mammals could have existed during the carboniferous had they evolved by that time. could humans have survived? im not sure, O2 levels were around 35%, which i think is approaching toxic levels for humans. but O2 levels would be the limiting factor; even though CO2 levels were around 5-7x what they are today, they still were orders of magnitude below toxic levels.
