ISI may be getting more funds than its officially allocated quota, but compared to CIA its still paltry. Pakistan spends a lot on security but one cannot compare that with the billions of dollars that the US spends on its security needs. The comparison primarily was between the CIA and ISI with regard to funding they get and the output that comes out of it.

The entire system is rotten. A lot of top bureaucrats are joining the corporate houses as lobbyists to influence the policy decisions. Even a former Army Chief has joined the board of a big corporate house. And now a retired Governor has joined a corporate house. Take it from me, the day is not far when even the Prime Minister of the country, after retiring, will join a corporate house to lobby for them.

Hi Ankit,

There is a link between security and mobocracy (or democracy) in the Indian context. Despite having a huge security force (half of which is permanently deployed to tackle internal issues - Northeast, Kashmir, Maoists) we are not able to tackle the terror problem. Most of the police force is busy in law and order problems due to the incidents I have cited. The intelligence gathering at the local level is almost nil and that is why somebody can easily walk in the German Bakery of Pune and leave a bomb there or 10 terrorists travel to Mumbai from Karachi and create mayhem.

Dear Hari,

The post largely focuses on military power but given the geographical location we are in with hostile neighbours, it is the most important aspect for us. Have also touched upon the economic aspect. Also, no matter at what rate the Indian economy grows, the fact still remains that we have the most number of poor and impoverished people in the world. The economy is surely growing but not everybody is getting rich.

Even the basic civic and infrastructural facilities have not reached the people in the villages. The list of challenges is long and we are nowhere near the superpower stage.
