#1 (the research part) never pans out -- partly because there's never enough time, but mostly because you're still living in la-la-land where you trust your parents not to be watching movies with risque scenes! You'd think we'd learn by now!

#3 is a pretty solid solution, and one that I've used on many occasion. Maybe TOO many, because now that just draws more attention to the awkwardness, so I will usually just revert to #4.
