it worked. thank you very much, shame your original post was deleted. this is useful for a small number of people who have refurbished 3gs with old bootrom but no 3.1.2 SHSH blobs.

Thanks very much.

on your page after rebooting the iphone it says now you can restore the custom firmware created earlier. the custom firmware i needed to create was 3.1.3 - do I need to restore this or can I now go straight to restoring a 4.0 custom firmware?

is there any reason that you are aware of that this will be patched by apple's rumoured update on monday (iOS 4.01)? Should I wait till the update to do this or do it now or will it not make a difference either way?
Thanks.

great. i have no problem with terminal. just currently in a place with no wifi so SSH not an option till tomorrow.

This is exactly what i've been looking for as i have refurbished 3gs (my last one died) with old bootrom and no previous SHSH backup at Saurik since the handset was replaced by apple.

iphone explorer and iphone browser are desktop applications that when you plug a jailbroken iphone in over USB give you read and write access to entire filesystem. so should work just as well as SSH but more securely. just wanted to check if anyone could confirm it. Nevermind, I'll give it a go anyway and if doesnt work i'll install SSH.

Would this work using iphone explorer or iphone browser over USB? I'm a little new to SSH.

I hope you're correct. I could barely afford to replace the iphone that was stolen. it was such a disappointment to get it home and discover that I couldn't jailbreak it. At least it is unlocked to begin with.

I'm still a bit confused. further down in the comments it says the baseband only affects the unlock, not the jailbreak. My iphone 3gs 3.1 is factory unlocked. Am I able to jailbreak without unlocking?

Had my 1 month old jailbroken 32gb iphone 3gs stolen at an exhibition in Guangzhou, China a couple of days ago. Went to Hong Kong and bought a new one which is thankfully factory unlocked as they all are in Hong Kong. However it has 3.1 firmware. I'd even done the ECID thing through Cydia on the phone that was stolen. Now I'm stuck with what feels like half an iphone. Really appreciate all the hard work the dev team has done so far and hope they can find a way to jailbreak the 3.1 3GS without a downgrade.
