Egypt is not on the periphery of the Arab world but the heart of the Arab world.
Where you are correct, is that most modern Arab states, are the creation of western colonial powers waiting to implode. The Arab world, before the Brits and French carved it up, was similar to Italy or Germany before unification. A bunch of city states that shared a common language and history.

Speaking of Which: We do have a progressive third party - the Green Party.

Ignoring your rant on the the socialist whatever, which doesn't represent more than 30 people on my side of the spectrum, the larger and more important point is this. The libertarian progressive coalition, that both you and I yearn(ed) for, is no longer necessary or relevant. An increasing majority of Americans oppose the war. Your focus should be on giving libertarian leaning republicans the cover to oppose the war.
In any case, the war in Afghanistan is over, excepting for a few more wasted dead American soldiers and Afghan civilians. The Patraeus/McChrystal Iraq strategy is not working and will not work. The situation in Afghanistan is different than Iraq, and the Administration and Generals are too stupid, or stubborn to figure it out. In Iraq you could bribe the Sunni warlords to turn against the foreign Al Qaeda fighters. In Afghanistan, the Taliban are the native population, the same strategy will not work. The problem the Administration has with Karzai is that he is keeping all the bribe money meant for the warlords. I can go on but I have work to do greening the world.
Need some proof that the war in Afghanistan is over? How's that Kandahar offensive going?

Max Shields and Eppie's comments are correct and spot on. Neo-con/Neo-liberal, Republican/Democrat, Fox/Msnbc, are all two sides of the same coin. Rachel Maddow is a tool of the Neo-liberal Democrat Party Obama Administration. Fox is the propaganda tool of the Neo-con Republican party. It's really not that complicated.
You keep making the mistake of confusing progressives with liberals. We are not the same. I know it can be confusing, because liberals like to call themselves progressives, but I thought you were smarter than that. Real progressives have more in common with libertarians than we do with Democrats. Stop watching Rachel and start reading Glenn Greenwald.

A suggestion for your next fund raising effort. Don't pick a fixed date during the quarter. Don't hold it during vacation. Don't hold it while everyone is distracted by health care or some other issue. Let the news be your friend.

Stop fixating on MSNBC. It is owned by GE, a defense contractor, health care company, major consumer lender, what do you expect? The best that can be said of MSNBC is that it has become for Obama what FOX was for Bush - a propaganda tool.
Energy independence is absolutely critical to the future economic prosperity of America and the ending of it's financially unsustainable empire. The gradual economic decline of America began in 1970 when it became an importer of oil. Not only does importing oil create a trade deficit, which hurts economic growth, it also causes U.S. corporations to use the U.S. military to engage in resource wars. It is the cause of the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.

Huffpo is a strange beast. In between the neo-con propaganda, you can find articles like John Cusack's beautifully written attack on Obama not releasing the torture photos, "A Hollow and Horrible Equivocation".
In any case, everyone including the usually astute Justin Raimondo, is missing the point regarding the Pelosi affair. I suggest you have Scott interview Ray McGovern of VIPS on how patriots in the intelligence community have been secretly defending our country for the last several years. Think Jane Harmon leak and Iran NIE as only two examples.
