Oh, look, we can see a chimney peeking above the roof! That means the fireplace on the second level is taking shape. Progress goes on!

We live in Maine and have much of the same wildlife here. We also garden successfully. There are incidents that occur along the way but it is nowhere near constant. I have watched raccoons check my corn one ear at a time. If it isn't ripe he leaves it bent down but still on the stalk. The day the ear goes missing is the day to pick your corn! We had a woodchuck and I used a live trap and transported him across the river and to a spot our animal control officer recommended. Turned him loose on land that was huge acerage with woods and nobody's garden nearby. Bears did raid our bird feeder once but that usually happens just as they come out of hibernation and are really hungry before the berries and other food is available.

A remote controlled roll=up cover over the slats would be nice.

Update: While looking for descendants of Horace I found an obituary for Reese Hubbard. Come to find out, he was the gr grandson of Elisha Hubbard, brother to Isaac and Philander! Wish I had met him and I send my condolences to the remaining family members. He was my 3rd cousin 1x removed. Horace was my 1st cousin 3x removed. Guess I win my bet!

Be sure to save a couple of stories about him in your family files. It is the personal stories that are so precious.

When doing family genealogy last evening I was amazed to find a new (to me) revelation that has had me giggling ever since. My gr gr grandfather, Isaac P. Hubbard. was born in Vermont and lived in Dayton, NY as well as Fredonia. Last night I discovered his brother, Philander, had a son named Horace Hamilton Hubbard raised in New York but traveled west as many in the family did and ended up in....wait for it....Couer D'Alene, ID! He and his wife, Harriet Adele, are buried in Forest Cemetery. He was a Justice of the Peace so I bet there were many married by him out there. My gr grandmother's first cousin! Maybe that was why I was so attracted to the location of this Blog Cabin? Do I have any distant cousins out there? Bet I do!

Just get some bear bells and shake them when walking outdoors if you have reason to believe there is one in the neighborhood. They are really afraid of people making noise. We used to go blueberrying early in the mornings and the bears like to berry then, too. We used aluminum foil pie plates and banged them together if we heard anything. Never saw one but it is possible they saw us.

Dylan and all...do you think you could include something like this for the pergola so it could be used in light showers or as sunshade in the summer? http://www.somfysystems.com/products/outdoor/perg...
