Look at the pictures of him in spring 2011 and compare them to pictures one year before. He looks exhausted and frustrated. He is like a sick and wounded animal. Bites and scratches everything that comes near him (referees, Valdano, unicef) in the frantic try to protect himself against another strike from his most feared enemy - FUTBOL CLUB BARCELONA !

I don't think that there is "the" best player of all time. I think there are the Five Greats and Messi will make them the Six Greats.
I also would've liked to see Xavi winning it because for me he is the personification of Barca's playing style and values but the simple truth is that it's an individual award (not an award for the most important player of the team that won the most important team title of the year) and that from that point of view Messi fully deserved it. In hindsight I'm actually happy that he won it because he's gonna be the first and only player to win it three times in a row. Be honest - who else will win it this year? Messi won in a WC year without winning the WC nor the CL. This year he won the CL. I'll eat my left leg if Messi won't win it this year.
