Preventative care is indeed critical. It is hard to imagine a completely private system taking the long view necessary to properly emphasize prevention, without some form of patient lock-in.

This is why I've come to support public care. I do fear the inefficiencies of bureaucracy, but the insurance system has brought us that without the accountability and transparency we can demand of government administration. Likewise, it's too easy for mediocre providers to "hide" in the system today, I don't believe that will be worse under public administration.

I normally find myself advocating libertarian positions, but in many ways health is a common concern, and today's treatment of it is a tragedy we should feel obligated to address.
