You're staying in the right area-there's lots of action on or near the Magnificent Mile. Darci and I like a place called Heaven on Seven a lot. It's cajun food and they have amazing gumbo. Otherwise, also close by the Mile is The Grand Lux Cafe or you could always go for the original Pizzeria Uno (or Due). Among the other Chicago "classics" is Morton's the Steakhouse. Rosebud has really good italian. Essentially, there are LOTS of options. :) You really can't leave the city without some Garrett's Popcorn (one of Oprah's favorites) I'm sure you'll have a great time where ever you end up.
Shopping wise, the American Girl Doll store, Water Tower Place and really all along the Magnificent Mile. Just south of the Mile is Millennium Park, home of "the bean" and a giant glass block art piece that projects people's faces and spits water. It's up there on the list of tourist attractions.
