In my book, people who push their self-righteous beliefs on others are jerks. Sorry if you disagree.

As a non-closeted big game hunter that lives in Boulder, I am not ashamed to admit that I prefer wild, free-range, antibiotic-free, and hormone-free meat that I harvest and process myself. However, beyond meat (and yes, "trophies"), there are a wide range of reasons why people hunt...including myself.

You are welcome to join me for elk season this year, if you can keep up. it will be a 7-9 day backpacking trip, off trail, in some truly nasty (and beautiful) country. Be prepared to hike. However, if I see a bull, big or small, near the road on my hike up, you can be sure I'll take the shot.

"Boulder prides itself on being a non-chain-store community"

That is the funniest thing I've read in the Camera in a while! Time to get your head out of the sand, Mr. Green: Home Depot, Safeway, REI, Apple, Whole Foods, Macys, Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom Rack, Chipotle, McDonalds, Burger King, Wahoos, Walgreens, Bicycle Village, La Peep, Lucille's, Snooze....I'm already tired of listing these off!

Where did I say the sign infringed on anybody’s rights, made mine (or others) beliefs immune from criticism, or that this group was uncivil? Those are your words, not mine.

I said the sign is “ridiculous intolerant garbage.” And yes, I’ve been to the Bible Belt and think those signs are equally ridiculous intolerant garbage. There is no double standard on my end. Intolerance is intolerance regardless of who is spewing the garbage.

If your goal is to improve the trust of Atheists in the public eye, insulting non-Atheists is not a very politically astute way to go about it. Hiding behind the argument of "they do it too," is incredibly ineffective and cowardly. Grow a pair and take the high road.

I'm an atheist, but this is just ridiculous intolerant garbage. Everyone has the right to their own spiritual or non-spiritual beliefs. Imagine if the billboard read "Choose [Insert: Christianity, Judaism, or Islam], it will be better for all of us."

The Boulder Atheists don't speak for this Boulder atheist.

The fact this group finds the need to put down all people who don't share their belief system speaks volumes about their own insecurities.

Have you spent much time talking with OHV users or shooters? I think most folks understand the issues you raise. Additionally, most of the people you deem lower-class are successful tax-paying citizens too. Quite a few of us are very liberal and live in the County. Are you saying that we shouldn't be able to enjoy the public land that we moved here for? The 'successful' people who moved near the canyon are presumably smart enough know that they are near USFS land where shooting and OHV use was allowed BEFORE they moved there. Why not find a solution to try to co-exist? Your argument is as ridiculous as those who claim that everyone who lives on fire prone land in the mountains should move.

Billy care to show us the evidence that shooting caused the other two? My understanding from the reports that the actual cause was officially undetermined in both cases...that shooting caused the fire was mere speculation.

Blaming shooters, OHV folks, and the homeless...who is to say that it wasn't a bunch of kids up from town partying away from their parents or *gasp* tax-paying adults up from town trying to have a getaway night under the stars. The point is: you have no clue. Remember, the four-mile fire was started by a non-gun-totting, non-OHV riding, tax-paying county resident who made a mistake. This could be the same.

I argued yesterday that we should hold off on blaming stray bullets or sparks from an ATV for causing this fire...low and behold it was a campfire! Now let's hold off on blaming specific user groups and follow the evidence again to address the problems we face. It is much more honest that going on a witch hunt against user groups you don't like.

That would be great, if the county will approve it. The Boulder Rifle Club tried to expand a few years ago (and thereby have the facilities to accommodate an expanded membership base) and they couldn't get approval.

Agreed.

Not disagreeing that the place is a mess. It would be great if the county would approve a public shooting range close to town to reduce pressure/the mess up the canyon. Right now there are no real options for those interested in shooting, beyond the Boulder Rifle Club's 7-10 year waiting list to become a member. Virtually every shooter I know would prefer a real public range versus hanging in the canyon. It would be safer and cleaner for all.

However, my point stands: let us get the evidence on what caused the FIRES, and deal with that threat appropriately. Let's not conflate the issue of fires with the mess in the OHV area. Using the fires as a justification to shutdown the shooting area is a dishonest reason, if shooters did not contribute to the flames.

BTW, I hike up that way all the time. I know the area very well. There are a lot of great trails up range of the shooting area and out of the way of ORVs. Go explore the area. It is beautiful country.
