3 things:
1997 I was in a department store walking past the home entertainment section, and the news was breaking that Princess Di had been killed in a car accident.
2001 We were watching TV after Bible study one night (Australian time) and saw the breaking news of September 11. Didn't go to bed that night.
2006 Sitting in a staff meeting and received a text message from my phone company saying that Steve Irwin, the crocodile hunter and more important to Australians than our Prime Minister, had been killed by a sting ray while filming a documentary.

are his kids there or is he by himself?

if you answered recreation with his kids... call the police.
