Except it was the Atheists that confused the meaning of the "A" in the first place. Scarlet Letter came out years before.

I think part of the reason the Atheists chose it was because it was a mark given by the religious community for behavior they deemed immoral (not right or wrong but sinful) and those that chose to to embrace the letter were giving the religious a big "screw you" (pun intended)

Yes it will further confuse the meaning, but both meanings are still condemning the church for stigmatizing people, and embracing not being subject to their warped morality. I see that as useful.

The more people that wear the A, the more people that reject the church, the better.

And unfortunately, seriously, the American public views sexual promiscuity far far far better than it does Atheism so maybe we could use the help.

Fornicators and Non-Religious unite - you have nothing to lose but condemnation from the logically challenged hypocrites.

A moderate in a group is not responsible for the actions of the extremists of the group. BUT, the moderates are absolutely for their groups reaction to those actions.

I do not blame Christians for some priests abusing kids, I do blame (and revile) there reaction to hide it, and protect those crazies.

I do not blame Muslims for some extremists blowing them selves up in acts of terror, but I do blame them for celebrating, and not denouncing them.

"They do not represent us, they did horrible things, and we no longer recognize them as part of our group" should be required every time the extremists step over the line. If you don't you are implicitly saying "I would never do that, but I am glad there are people in my organization that would"

I think your idea is closer to both what I think and what makes sense in terms of the general use of the word "activist" when it comes to minority groups.

Being a gay activist does not mean you want everyone to be gay, they just want to be treated equally and fairly, and remove the privledged status of "straights"
