I'm planning to buy an iphone off of ebay and then use it with my current AT&T sim card which has a WIX block on it. So I'll only use wifi and save $30 a month. Do i need to unlock it to do this, or will it work locked because I'm using a regular AT&T sim?

oh also, which 3G's have baseband 2.28 and which ones have 2.30. i.e. is their a certain date the iphone had to be made before in order for it to have 2.28?

I'd get either a 2G or 3G there isn't much difference for me. The thing I'm worried about is the faster processor in the 3GS. And I believe there's a new graphics chip which may make a difference in application support?

@ Confucious - I'm in high school and go to a boarding school -- so whenever I'm on campus I have wifi, when I'm home I have wifi, and when I'm around downtown Chicago I basically have wifi wherever I go. So I don't need data, plus my parents won't pay for it.

@Shimaa - There probably will be, if not, I'll either go with the 3G or wait a little while

Hi, I'm looking for some advice. I'm would really like an iPhone, but I don't want to pay for data, so I'm planning to buy one off ebay, unlock it, and use it with a different SIM that has a WIX block.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I should buy a 3G or wait until the 3GS is released and buy it. I'm new to the unlocking business, so I don't know how long it usually takes to unlock a phone. Will 3.0 be unlocked fairly quickly? Should go ahead and buy a 3G or wait until the 3GS is released and buy that?

I'm perfectly willing to wait, I realize that the dev team members do this in addition to their regular lives :)
