I read that ultrasound of either type, vaginal or external can't detect a fetus in the very early stages. Then as gestation progresses there's only 1 week that a vaginal ultrasound only can see it. After that it can be done externally.

My Dad was a road contractor back in the day and he just told me that when they were grading for a road, the really big rocks that protruded out and were hard to remove were called ni**erhead rocks, and were also the really big ones that wouldn't go thru the sorter thingy, or whatever he called it.

Just to give some perspective on how common that usage was at one time in this country, and sometimes it just referred to a big rock.
