Victor, you are absolutely right. It's everywhere and needs to be confronted everywhere as you do with your in-laws and I hope some day they "get it". I grew up with Jim Crow and lynchings, when it was illegal in many states for blacks and whites to marry and the dominant, white male culture subjugated everybody, including white women. Mexicans didn't fare too well either, and still don't, and it's true that Mexico is a very racist country. So what? If a million people say a stupid thing, it's still stupid. You may change your way of thinking if your son has to go to school here.

They know nothing of the sort, nor do you. Personally I shudder to think of what life must be like at Amador High for people of color, gender benders, or even Jewish kids. We learned something about the atmosphere there for the latter recently you may recall. This county is cursed with more than our share of bigots as anyone knows who has lived here for more than a week. Unfortunately they raise children and the atmosphere they create actually encourages gang involvement. The lack of cross cultural training and exposure, foreign language proficiency, world history, conflict resolution and even foreign travel are just a few of the things that hamper our students when they leave the county and try to get out there and function in the real world. I feel sorry for them, ALL of them.
