Great points, Steve - those are important and powerful misconceptions that shape the way we think about information and presentation. Educational psychologist Richard E. Mayer has done some important research in this field that offers evidence for what you're saying, as well as the related research on the limits of working memory and the nature of the dual processing of information through visual and verbal channels.

We have a long way to go, though - I find that the misconceptions are so strong that even evidence doesn't always persuade people to present their ideas in a more effective way.
