It seems that the police officer you are referring to should face a much stiffer penalty, since he was not only supposedly well trained in firearm safety, but had a position of extra responsibility. Both should rot in jail for a very long time.

The news report did not say the stupid male was the father of the children, it indicated that he was not their father, describing him as the "mother's boyfriend". So maybe he didn't care about those children because they weren't his, that happens a lot...

The adult male with the concealed weapon permit should be prosecuted to the max, since he knew better. But what were those kids doing out in a car at midnight anyway, instead of home in their beds? Sounds like they weren't being well taken care of to begin with, especially since the stupid adult had the gun in their presence, knew he was leaving it within reach, and didn't notice the child climbing out of his seat, even though the adult was right there pumping gas...
