It's unbelievable that this is even an issue.
If you can't take care of children, don't have so many....or better yet, any. It does not take more than an 8th grade education for an adult man and woman to understand how contraception works.
The air pump thing was sarcasm. Obviously. And if there ever were any sort of licensing program created, it would be for people who regularly ride their bikes in traffic. There would clearly be a difference between those who ride on cul-de-sacs and those who tango with cars on MLK.
I truly have no problem sharing the road, but I just think that the expense and the safety responsibility need to be shared too. The sarcasm in my comment is due to years of mounting frustration with "sharing the road" with users who habitually don't obey traffic laws and request construction projects in a struggling economy to redo roads in a way that benefits them. And yes, the amount has "exceeded" that. But how much has been generated by it? And how much of what it has exceeded has been used on projects like the one proposed? I'm just saying that the extra revenue wouldn't hurt.
And the school debate is a whole other issue. I don't have children either, but frankly I'm a little more compassionate toward children than I am bicyclists. And, in my estimation, their education ultimately benefits society more than bike lanes do.
Sure, as soon as bicyclists get license plates, registration fees, rider's licenses (so they know which lane is theirs and stay in it), and air pump taxes to help contribute to the cost of construction. Until then, I'd like to drive on what I paid for.
I agree with so many of the comments that were posted on this issue and many others. It seems like loads of people are fired up about these issues, to the point of anger, dismay, and near anarchy. I guess the question that crosses my mind is, why do none of the incensed run for public office? I repeatedly read what an idiot the mayor is, how this is clearly Obama's fault, how the tax payers are footing the bill for the bleeding heart politicians in Washington. So why don't one of you that is free of any coronary maladies, mental deficiencies and bureaucratic obligations step forward and lead the pack? There is much to be changed, and it seems you would have quite a following. Snarkiness aside, I'd vote for you.
