The cheapest European cities to fly to from Los Angeles this summer have been Istanbul and Zurich. Both in the $500's. Typically the cheapest cities are London and Dublin (or Shannon) since they are the closest. So, it's a big surprise that Istanbul, which is practically in the Middle East, and Zurich, in the middle of Western Europe, and so cheap.

Thanks for contacting me. January 15th is an expensive weekend to fly to Asia, many sold out seats which are driving up prices. If you could fly earlier, perhaps on January 7th, there are cheaper fares. Also, if you're willing to fly on Air China, the prices are only $929 total, http://tinyurl.com/3n4kjzc

Hopefully, I can help you find something that's fits your parameters.

Just an idea, you could fly SEA to Dublin in last August for about $850. And, then book a separate itinerary on RyanAir.com from Dublin to Frankfurt for about $100. So, the total cost would be around $950 each r/t.

However, if you wanted to stay 14 days, you'd need to stretch your trip into early September, which may not work for your granddaughters.

For example, you could fly SEA to DUB, and then DUB to FRA on August 23rd and return on Sept 6th for around $950 total. Just an idea.

I will continue checking prices for you.
