The founders intended the common citizen to own the weaponry to defend against tyranny of the government. They were fully aware that as time passed technology would advance and that the common citizen would need to keep up with that technology to be able to defend themselves. Common citzens owned cannon and mortar back then. What is todays equivalent? There should be no fear of a mentally healthy, law abiding person owning any form of weapon. And for the insane, criminal type...well those kinds of people will always find a way to commit their horrible acts. They used machetes in Rawanda for instance. Machetes are common TOOLS used in Rawanda that happens to be useful for more than chopping away the jungle. I have many friends in law enforcement that love to tell me how the weapon of choice for many is the automobile. Shall we outlaw our cars?
