Wow - again, I had no idea sites such as these existed! It sounds horribly elitist, but in some ways isn't it similar to those who griped when Facebook expanded beyond just college students?
I liked this article very much. After more than a few years of Facebooking, I am getting to a point in my life where I just don't have the time - or the desire - anymore. I may sound like an old crab, but I talk to the people who I want to and they know what is going on with my life. I recently "deactivated" my personal account and I think that was the right decision for me. I'm not ready to permanently delete it, but I have bookmarked this article in case the day ever comes.
Great video! I have a few friends on Facebook that I would love to see them live out their Facebook actions in the real world-- I don't think any of them would have the courage to say the things they do on Facebook if they were standing at the persons front door!
I remember when someone first contacted me through Facebook chat - I was completely caught off guard! I didn't like that people could tell when I was online (let alone on Facebook) which is why I was never a big AIM-er or Google chatter. When this happened to me it was also a person who I was Facebook friends with, but hadn't seen in years... an unwelcome blast from the past you could say. I quickly said my goodbye and permanently logged out of the Facebook chat feature - never again!
I agree with the previous comment - we all have something to say (or complain) about Facebook. Some of the things in this list are the precise things that I appreciate with Facebook. For instance, I like the standard blue and white look, and have no desire to customize my own "look". I don't really want to make connections with people outside my network because, yes, I use Facebook as a giant address book. I agree with not owning what you put out there though - especially is you choose to deactivate your account, Facebook can still hold on to all of your information/pictures/etc.
Wow I had no idea about all of this. I am shocked that all 19 were within 2 steps of the original suspects. Though I so think there is absolutely a usefulness in this technique, it is unfortunate that in this case we can only see the whole picture after the fact. Hindsight always provides a clearer vision, a what if...? Hopefully we can use similar tehcniques in the future to prevent these atrocities before they happen.
It's really interesting to see this laid out visually. It makes me think about my own family tree and network centralization. My father tends to be the "connector" in my family - wanting to document and share our history. Without him, I'm not sure how much connectedness we would feel as a family, similar to the central nodes and their role.
Evernote sounds like a pretty good program, particularly for filing away important documents (such as a new lease). However, on a day to day basis, I think I will always be a pen and paper gal - jotting lists and reminders here and there. Even though I have a iPhone, I still carry my paper calendar with me everywhere - it's just easier for me to keep dates by hand than in my phone.
I'm definitely not a highschooler, and I am usually pretty good with time management, but this semester I'm dealing with a lot of end of the term catch-up work due to some personal issues over the past few months. As I struggle to finish this semester successfully, I know that my recent decision to deactivate my Facebook account is the best thing I could have done. I knew getting through December was going to be tough enough without any "optional" hurdles, such as the distraction of Facebook. I have been spending a lot of time on the computer catching up on this class, and I am glad that I didn't have the option to check up on friends or see who wrote on my wall.
Very interesting... for the past few years I have subscribed to the Blockbuster version of mail-order movies, but I recently experienced the Netflix streaming videos at a friends house, and let me say, I am definitely thinking of switching over. Seems like a great system - especially since my local Des Peres Blockbuster just closed!
