Speaking as a fellow small business owner, I respectfully disagree.

It is unfair to say that the credit card company "does nothing". Perhaps you would rather build your own international payments network from scratch? Also as a small business owner who accepts cards, you made a choice to accept cards, presumably based on cost/benefit analysis that the revenue you would gain exceeds the swipe cost. How much *less* revenue would your business generate if you didn't accept Visa/Mastercard? I suspect quite a bit more than the $50K you cited.

If swipe fees are really that burdensome, the free market ensures that someone will build a better mousetrap to deliver a cheaper solution. PayPal is a classic example. The real problem is governmental interference in the free market. The Durbin amendment to Dodd-Frank basically stole a huge income source from banks. I can't fault the banks for trying to find a substitute source of revenue to make up for what was taken away.

As a business owner, you wouldn't merely roll over if your suppliers jacked up the cost of your goods. Why would we expect the banks to.
