This strikes me as similar to saying, "I could never find any friends in New York."

Jesus drew huge crowds because he spoke the truth. Some (not all) of today's mega-churches are large for the same reason.

Of course, many pastors who speak the truth have not seen explosive growth in their congregations. Neither condition (size or truth) guarantees the other.

As for meeting my spiritual needs, that's not necessarily the preaching pastor's job.

What, by the way, is the point and purpose of going to church?

I think my church here in Seattle could be interested in adding an organist to a worship band if he/she has a sufficient number of tattoos.

The very notion of "newfangled Tupperware" is making me giggle.

There is an opportunity here for a whole new level of Christianese! I might start going with LMKO or LMHO (for "keister" or "hind-parts").

But I hope "Over the Hills and Far Away" is OK? Because the band played that (acoustically and without the vocals) when I visited one of the campuses of our relatively well-established, but purposefully edgy, church. I'd hate to know that the pastor had to talk to the band after that.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Chandler's talk on homosexuality is about a third of the way down this page (5.21.10):

Of course, as a Bible teacher, he appeals greatly to his understanding of the Bible, so I'm not sure how much it will be worth to you. But he also addresses the culture in which it was written, as well as today's culture.

I find that Matt's anger is generally reserved for those who are using Jesus' name to further their own agendas rather than for those who are earnestly seeking the truth, regardless of their current behavior or their perception of themselves. So this isn't a particularly angry talk.

OK. I'm glad to hear your answer.

My reaction to all this is largely informed by Isaiah 55:9--"As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."

I find that as I put my preconceptions aside and take the Bible to mean what it says--as I apply Malachi 3:10 broadly and take God up on his invitation to "test me in this"--I find that my life and those of those around me improved. I can't remember doing what I knew the Bible said to do and thinking later, "Man, that was stupid." Though I'll admit that my memory may be a bit selective.

If you want to hear my take on homosexuality (which is largely ripped from Matt Chandler), I'd be glad to go there. Or, even better, I would refer you to his podcast on the topic.

I will skip all my supporting evidence and head straight for the conclusion:

We are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, not conformed to the pattern of this world.

Has your view on this topic changed since you came to know Jesus? If not (i.e. if this view about not hurting anybody matches what you believed before), then I suggest that you seriously consider that it is your thinking that is wrong, not God's standards.

Much sin, I find, is the result of taking a short-cut outside of God's design to achieve something (or at least the shadow of something) that is good. This applies to homosexuality, heterosexual promiscuity, "pr0n", thievery, and murder, to name a few.

Kyle Idleman of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville referenced this topic on September 3-4, 2010. As I listened to the podcast, I thought, "Did he just say, 'Jon Acuff'?"

The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. www.triggerpointbook.com

If you or someone you know deals with pain, I highly encourage you to check this book out. Amazon has it for, like, $16, and you can see hundreds of positive testimonials there.

Most pain is muscular. Even pain that seems to come from ligaments, joints, or bones is often muscular. And often the pain is not the same place as the problem. The workbook is full of diagrams and procedures for finding and dealing with the problem sites.

It may sound a little hocus-pocus, but it makes physiological sense, and it works.

Again, that's www.triggerpointbook.com
