I've never posted a comment here before, but I felt so disgusted by their wives comments, which were not mentioned in the article posted here, but in a different version I read, that I wanted to share it here:

"Their wives told The Associated Press in an interview at the time that the couples had U.S. roots but the United States was a country of "kafirs" – Arabic for heathens."

I'll just repeat my point for emphasis: "the United States was a country of kafirs!" The treachery is mind-boggling.
