It's the same reason you have to pay for a newspaper or magazine, yet there are advertisements contained in it. Each revenue stream partially pays for the product. You're certainly not forced to watch any of the programming available. And you can access over-the-air programs and only pay once (by watching the commercials).

I had a VCR several (many? - time flies) years ago that claimed it would skip commercials. It did a fairly decent job of picking up the off-screen cues and fast-forwarding through them. It messed up once in awhile, but if memory serves it never skipped the program, just sometimes stopped it's fast-forward too soon.

While a DVR to take care of it would be nice, I'm afraid of what the broadcasters might do in retaliation. If gouging large corporate retailers for ad space that I fast-forward past is what it takes for me to be entertained (or distracted as the case may be) at a nominal fee, I can put up with the irritation. All that "high-quality programming" comes at a price, and if it comes out of the pocket of a company I don't do business with, all the better. Since most of our shopping is done based upon price rather than brand-loyalty, we may be saving even more - we buy generics and house-brands that don't spend nearly as much on advertising as the big swingers.

I'm with Wave Cable, and their provided remote has a 30-second skip back button. I have to fast-forward (5X) then hit play and "back-space" to the start of the show segment. Beats the commercials though. It also has a 5-minute jump forward and back. Maybe I should jump 5-minutes forward, then back in 30-second segments. Probably be quicker.

So we should assume that 1% of the world's population wants to illegally own the 30 songs he was found guilty of sharing?

And you're of the belief that these songs would all be hexa-platinum releases if we could only stop these terrible free downloads? Not likely. The songs being illegally downloaded are most likely a fair sampling of the songs which law-abiding citizens are purchasing. They're already in demand, and most people are willing to pay for them, some are not.

Some of the songs in question made gold, and a couple of the albums they were on were platinum and even double-platinum. Others, while popular, weren't as successful.

Did the owners of the songs loose money because of file sharing of these 30 songs? Undoubtedly. Did they loose $675,000 off those 30 songs? Doubtful. What RIAA wants to do is make an example out of him to scare everyone else.

What happened to punishment fitting the crime?

By your math, 6 million downloads of each song, yet you say "Very few people do".

Which is it?

Actually it will eliminate his ability to discharge any more debt for 8 years (assuming he filed chapter 7). Which means he's a good risk for a loan right after his bankruptcy - he can't get out from under the new loans easily.
