What do you mean by "locking doors"? You mean like on your car, where you have to pull a lever or push a button inside to open it? Those are about as strong as paper. A cover over the gas door with a padlock? Expensive, ugly, and again, nothing that a small crowbar can't deal with. And, as the article explained, they already installed locking gas caps. So, umm... "DUH", it's not so simple as you might like to think.

Yes, it is a mixed blessing. The more intensely beautiful and visible it is, the more likely the "solar storm" will also cause damage to satellites and power transmission (such as the 1989 solar storm that took down Quebec's power grid).

Ummm, no. No, it's not. The fact that we see it so far south is a reflection of the magnitude and energy of the flow of charged particles from the solar flare or coronal mass ejection (CME).

Furthermore, it does not "deplete" the atmosphere in any way. The oxygen and nitrogen in the upper atmosphere simply absorb the energy from the solar particles and re-release it as... light. Cool, awe-inspiring, beautiful light.

Signs or no signs doesn't matter. Traffic can slow or stall for _any_ reason. Fundamental problem is too many drivers can't (or won't) look past their own front bumper to see what's happening ahead.

The wholesalers who were there filling the tanks some time since you saw them last week. The station owners have pretty much no say in the "rack price" they pay to get their tanks filled. Think about getting only ten cents a gallon to meet all your operating expenses, debt and payroll...
