Having moved to Toronto, (but no real snow here yet) yes we are geared up for it: snow clearing equipment, grit/salt; effective snow shovels, and for the very rich underground heating on their home driveways! Mr D you are of course right and despite the historical anomaly of heavy snow in each of the last 3 years, there is no justification for certainly the southern parts of the UK investing in this equipment although arguably Edinburgh and Aberdeen should.

I was amused when a colleague arrived at Heathrow about 2 years ago when London ground to halt with no tubes or buses because of the snow, his offer to drive the taxi driver to Canary Wharf himself because he was used to driving in snow was turned down - despite the taxi driver's concerns about his ability to cope with it!

At last!

Freedom does not mean that every minority have to be allowed to continue to do what they want, where they want, when they want. There are others of us who want the freedom to enjoy Parliament Sq as a beautiful sqaure, free from distracting eyesores.

Mr D. you are taking the easy option. Much more challenging is to find any HH comnet that is sensible!

But on this basis, an equalities impact and an officer to oversee it are clearly required as obviously the state is exploiting a female in her 80s in forcing her to continue to work until her death with no prospect of retirement or a pension. Maybe a fighting fund should be set up to assist her to fight this outrageous exploitation!!

Surely a dead chicken is a dead chicken! Does it matter if it was killed this way - surely it only has significance if it was the other way round. What was the incremental cost of this announcement? Can the coalition start minimising this nanny state mentality!

Tom,

This a great shame as while I thought we would seldom share the same views on things when I first turned to this blog, I have been surprised over the last couple of years have often I support what you say. This probably worries you more than me as someone who has never considered voting Labour (old or new) in my life.

I wish you every success going forward (well almost!); I shall miss particularly those posts tagged ‘whimsy’ – were your evident good humour was there for all to see.

Where to go now for the left of centre coherent comment?

You may be right Peter, but the implication is Labour has had to resort to loan sharks. 14.9% interest over a 3 month term and then rolled up would give an APR of over 60%! Of course that is probably what the rating agencies would have insisted the UK paying if Labour had won the election!!!

What a great wheeze - indefinite term loans at 0% interest with no security. Labour's grip on economics continues unabated!

Tom. You are completely wrong on this and entering very dangerous territory. You have totally failed to recognise the privilege extended uniquely to those at YAB’s part of the political spectrum. They are entitled (nay required) to speak/write absolute ‘rubbish’ and to be immune from any criticism because it is racist, anti-feminist, fascist, and every other –ist you can think of. Facts form no part in their analysis. We must all refrain from such activities while at the same time celebrating the freedom we have in their world. Happy days!
