There is an appeal that wrestling has and if you stray far enough away from it, you risk losing a portion of your fanbase. You have to have wrestling, storyline, characters, promos etc. If you are missing one of those elements, you are losing fans.
ECW was a niche brand because of this. They had some very rabid and loyal fans because ECW catered to them. They had a hardcore audience. Unfortunately they were too niche for mainstream. I feel they presented too much of a mature product for a national audience at that time.
The available fans between TNA and WWE is much larger versus those indy fans who only will watch something completely unique. This is why I don't think TNA should be anti-WWE, because you can share those fans.
