I cannot think of a single way that a teacher's union helps the children get a good education. The union is there to collectively force platinum plated benefits for their members. In an 'At-Will' employment State like Oregon, it's time to bring the teacher's workforce into line with the rest of the workforce. They should make do with IRA's or 401k's instead of juicy pension plans. Their pay should be related to performance instead of collective whining. Their continued employment should be related to quality instead of tenure.

Go ahead Reynolds Teachers... strike. I wish you would. It will be the first step to getting rid of you and your union that is doing nothing for the kids and everything for you.

BTW... since Reynolds is towards the bottom of the list in graduation statistics, do you teachers feel you have any right to wheedle for more lucrative salaries and benefits?

It would be great if the teachers strike. First off, the replacements will probably get better results than the status quo. Secondly, it is a great first step to breaking the union and getting performance oriented professionals in there. Of course, the administration needs to be replaced as well.

The vast majority of the workforce accepts that Oregon is an "At Will" State. I'd love to see the teachers have to play by the same rules as most other workers. It's time for their platinum plated pensions, tenure, seniority, and other perks to be aligned with the rest of us who are employed.

Reynolds wasted a huge chunk of money on a huge new auditorium and then wailed about how there wasn't enough money for books and computers. Until they get their fiscal house in order, learn how to prioritize, and become mainstream with the rest of the workforce, they shouldn't get another salary raise or increased funding. Their mantra of "But it's for the Chilllldrrreeennnnn" is a smokescreen to cover for their lack of desire to live with the realities that face the rest of us. Maybe it's sour grapes, but my salary decreased over the past years and I live with IRA's and 401k plans. Also, merit trumps seniority and tenure doesn't even exist in the industry.

Wasn't it earlier this week that KATU printed a story about how public assistance is being squandered at strip clubs and gambling casinos? And now I should be outraged over this? Uhmmm.... I don't think so. I still think welfare recipients need to pass a drug test every time they pick up their checks.

Seeing as how they overwhelmingly approved it, I highly doubt this new contract is fair to the community. I really wish teachers had to make do with salaries and benefits packages commensurate with the rest of the labor force.

I believe that the issue is how many cattle are tested out of each herd. A small sample from a population that has shared the same conditions and food is, indeed, a valid program. This is an matter of statistics and appropriate sample size. For example, a random sample of 1700 is appropriate to predict the consensus of the nation. The shame belongs of KATU for fear mongering and their lack of understanding of statistical theory.
