While it is good practice for individuals to routinely check their credit reports and freeze their files with the credit bureaus, there are others areas of identity theft exposure. There are seven areas of identity theft risk, besides financial IDT: drivers license IDT; medical IDT; criminal IDT; child IDT; synthetic IDT.

Financial identity theft is about 26% of the total IDT crimes that occur each year, so taking the steps that the author recommends still leaves one at risk. Medical IDT is number one type of IDT crime. How does freezing a credit file protect you? And this is a crime that has killed.

It has been determine that 10% of children who have a monitoring service have had their IDT stolen.

Someone, maybe, out there getting traffic tickets or committing crimes your name? It happens. Your personal information is valuable, not to mention the time and money it can cost to restore a stolen identity.
