Mushers train their dogs far from pubic view. Many of the awful things that happened to dogs during training were reported by the mushers themselves. Wolfmoonsiberian, people will not think the dogs are treated well if they go to an Iditarod kennel. Many, many jurisdictions across the United State have passed laws that ban or greatly restrict dog chaining. People understand that chaining is terribly cruel. They become upset when they see the dogs chained up. Many kennel have lots of dogs. Rachael, Scdoris, for example, has over 100 dogs. People who own dogs know that routine veterinary care for one dog is expensive. Folks aren't stupid. They know that mushers aren't spending thousands of dollars each year for vet care. Another factor is that the quotes on the Sled Dog Action Coalition website are easy to verify. People have verified the quotes and they've learned a lot about Iditarod dog cruelties.

The Iditarod is an extremely arduous race. Sometimes the snow is very deep and the winds are very strong. Hurricane force winds have been reported during Iditarods. It's especially grueling for small dogs to race under these circumstances. In addition, dogs have been damaged by pulling heavy loads. Loads are proportionally heavier for smaller dogs.

Puppies, small dogs and old dogs undergo strenuous training for the Iditarod. In the 2011 race alone, there's a 12 year-old dog, two one-year old dogs and several that weigh between 35 and 40 pounds. Regarding the 40 pound dog, musher Dallas Seavey said "She’s not much of a dog. Only about 40 pounds. And the reason my dad sold her is because she was small."
