I cringed when I read this initially as well. Interestingly, though, Chris Dempsey wrote a similar story and the direct quote was reported differently. I cut and pasted it below. In re-reading this, what I read was more about scheme. Under Tad, the Buffs play more smothering man on the wings and sag a bit at the top of the key and beyond because they are more leery of the high screen and Tad likes his points guards to go underneath those. Regardless, I kind of want this issue to die and let's remember Ski for what he was: a tough as nails combo guard who gave the program everything he had for four years.

"I don't think they know I can hold my ground. And I can guard the ball as well as I can. I didn't get to show my defensive ability too much (at CU). With these hour and 15 minute workouts I can really pressure the guy I'm guarding, make him turn the ball a little bit, make him uncomfortable."

Bay Area needs to represent. There are thousands of alums all over Alameda County, SF, and Marin. You need to show up on Saturday. This team will not do a repeat of the 2010 Squawkins squad that got pelted 52-7.

Remember when Sacramento, Berkeley/Oakland, and SF were a pipeline for us. Here's some names of some ballers from the 1990s and early 2000s recruiting classes:

Donald Strickland
Rashidi Barnes
Damen Wheeler
Hannibal Navies
Robert Portis
Andrew Welsh
James Kidd
Rae Carruth
Tyrone Henderson
Marcus Williams (would later transfer to Wazzu and be the Raider who Romo punched out of the league)

I agree with your post, in particular about XJ. He needs to learn that coming off screen and/or shooting 3s off the bounce is not his game. He needs to do more work on the baseline and mix that up on the block. Once he missed a few of those bunnies in the first half, he became a head case.

The problem with this team is two fold: zero knock down shooters and we only have one player who can create off the dribble with a threat to finish. I am surprised at Jaron's lack of in-season development. His ball handling is suspect and he is not a good finisher. I thought he was more skilled than he has shown.

Eventually, Thomas will be a good player, I think, and I also think Gordon will as well But with this current team, if Booker AND Johnson are having poor offensive games, we can't manufacture offense. And, I realize that Tad's calling card is rebounding and defense, but you also need to be able to score.

I don't want to be the sky is falling guy, but I think this team might just have another home game --- the first round of the NIT, unfortunately.

Honestly, I doubt we win one of the three left on our schedule, which will make tonight's performance look even worse in a few weeks.

A few thoughts: XJ should not have been guarding Nick Johnson so much --- that is a bad matchup for us. XJ looks out of shape and a step slow at times; I think he could stand to lose 10-15 libs.

Dustin Thomas has zero confidence, and that's evident in how he panics on the floor.

XTalton has to be able to break people down once in a while and make a play.

Better and more dynamic.

Not that it matters all that much, but Brock Berglund is on the move again. He may be a bit of a prima donna, but perhaps offering him an opportunity as a preferred walk-on wouldn't hurt. It would be his fourth or fifth stop. When I saw him play against Broomfield in the state semi-finals, I thought he was better and more than Craig Ochs was.

Brock didn't like Embrieneimy's NFL scheme because he saw himself in more of a spread. Luke Del Rio is leaving Alabama as well.

I am as happy for Ski as any Buff I've ever watched play. You can tell he's the ultimate gym rat and loves basketball more than anything. You can tell that him and Tad have a real close relationship and Tad loves Ski's competitive fire. People like to bag on Ski for shot selection but the kid is tough as nails and never shies away from the big moments. Historically, he has played his best against the best.

He led us scoring in all three NCAA tournament games over the past two seasons -- people forget that. He is the ultimate gamer and The Mayor is precisely right --- this team is a round of 32 team with a mediocre Ski and an elite 8 potential squad with Ski using the bounce and the three ball within the offense.

I hope there's a day Buff Nation can honor Dre since he never got to particpate in Senior Day and his last two home games he sat out because of mono. The kid never got the proper send off and everyone needs to remember he was one of the cornerstones of Coach Boyle's first recruiting class. Though not built like one, Dre was a junkyard dawg on the court and had an edge of nastiness that I loved about him. Very happy for and proud of Andre Roberson.
