There is a ton of information about selecting a stick here:

One of my kids likes the Forsberg curve, but the other does not, so it's definitely personal.

It's kind of hard to say that all the rinks in the country have the same standards. They do all this and more where my kids skate. The rink is admittedly not very strict about anything, and the other rink nearby is completely unsupervised during open skate.

Great idea on switching directions. I've never seen that except at a roller rink!

Thanks for the input Brent and kudos to you for your head's up thinking regarding your child's stress level regarding the game. You bring up a good point about the importance of really listening a being in tune with your player so that you will know when they have had a bit too much. Any other thoughts on this?

Thank you for providing this very valid issue. Do any other readers have ideas on this? My best advice is to keep your child involved as best you can. When he does catch up, he could very well overtake those players who have peaked at younger ages.

I am so sorry for your unfortunate situation. It is good, however, that your son finds other outlets to play. In the end, it is about the love of the game and playing it for enjoyment! Does anyone have any advice for Colorado Mom to deal with her situation? Please share!!
