Thanks for your response! I plan to give this a try tonight. I assume that iTunes 10.5 is safe for future jailbreak/unlock needs, correct?

I have an iPhone 4 on iOS version 4.2.1 with baseband 01.59.00. I would like to upgrade to iOS 5. I have no need at this time to jailbreak or unlock. However, when I sell it in about a month, I would like to be able to jailbreak and unlock at that time, for the resale value.

If I use redsn0w to create a custom IPSW with iOS 5 and use that to restore in iTunes, will I then be able to later jailbreak and unlock (hopefully with an untethered jailbreak, if one is available at that time)? If I use the custom IPSW from redsn0w without jailbreaking, will I have a tethered boot or is that only if I were to go the next step and actually jailbreak? With the custom IPSW from redsn0w, will I have the issue of the single signal bar that I experienced when I attempted to upgrade above 4.2.1 with Pwnage? Also, will I still be able to downgrade back to 4.2.1 if I prefer (YES, I have my SHSH blobs for 4.2.1 available)?

What a bummer! Is it safe to assume that since the 01.59.00 baseband is not fully compatible with the 4.3 jailbreak that it more than likely will not be compatible with a future 5.0 jailbreak? I maintain my jailbreak and unlock solely for resale value, and I'm thinking that it won't have as much of a resale value if it can't be upgraded. So, I'm trying to decide if I should just do a regular restore and forget about the jailbreak and unlock. I would hate to lose out, though, if there's hope for the future.

A while ago I posted about my issue of losing MMS functionality when upgrading my iPhone 4 from 4.2.1 to 4.3.1 via PwnageTool and unlocking via Ultrasn0w. I'm on AT&T and have the older 01.59.00 baseband. I was instructed to turn off the phone via the power button and swipe rather than respring. So, I restored with my custom IPSW again and made sure I powered off the device that way after installing Ultrasn0w. That did not fix the MMS problem. So, I restored with my 4.2.1 custom IPSW. Since then, I tried 1 more time to upgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.3.1 and another time to upgrade from 4.2.1 to custom 4.3.3. Each time, I installed Ultrasn0w and powered off via the power button and slide to turn off instead of respringing. What am I missing? I've noticed other people reporting the same issues here and in other forums. Is this just a known, unfortunate issue for some people with the older baseband on AT&T? Let me know if you need any other info to help address my issue. Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone is able to provide!

I did both. I clicked the button to Restart Springboard and then once that completed, I powered down normally. I did not realize that I should not press the button to restart springboard. I re-installed 4.2.1 last night, but I'm eager to install 4.3.1 again and install Ultrasn0w without pressing the Restart Springboard button. Thanks for letting me know! I did not realize that this is what the instructions meant.

I have an iPhone 4 on modem firmware 01.59.00. I just upgraded to 4.3.1 via Pwnage 4.3 and installed Ultrasn0w 1.2.1. I'm on official AT&T in the US and only installed Ultrasn0w to fix the signal bar issue. However, I'm now unable to send and receive MMS. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Great! Thanks! That doesn't sound too bad. I'll give it a try.

Any idea what will happen if 9.2 doesn't work for me? I would rather not downgrade if I don't have to.

The previous poster said iTunes 9.2 worked for him. Should I try it? How will I know if it doesn't work? Could I cause irreparable damage?
