The games are largely self-contained in terms of story. There are a few that can branch between a few games (Path of Radiance & Radiant Dawn) and some that take place in the same "world" (Binding Blade & Burning Sword; Shadow Dragon & Mystery of the Emblem & Awakening) but in general, you can pick up anyone that looks good to you and just start playing. My personal favorites are Sacred Stones (Just got it's Wii U virtual console release for its 10th birthday) and Awakening.

From my understanding of the leak it was that people of the same sex could reach a new max tier Support, A+. Still not S, so I am not sure if they get married, or if it is just rank 4 Support benefits.
