Speaking of late or missing a race. I had an interesting thing happen to me last may when I went to run the One America 500 1/2 marathon in Indianapolis. I took the train from my hometown of Mt. Pleasant, Ia to Chicago to meet my sister and then we were supposed to drive to Indianapolis and pick up our race packs. Long story short the train was 3 hours late and my sister and I both forgot to change our watches due to the different time zone. Needless to say I literally had the guy at the expo hand me my bag and the announcement came over the P.A. that the expo was over. My sister and I both looked at each other funny(we thought we had another hour to look around). So PHEW just made it!! Just a lesson learned on making sure if your traveling to a race make sure if your in a different time zone that you remember to change your watch to the right time.
Stevie, Enjoy the outer banks. I remember going there(Nags Head) for a family reunion 25 years ago for a family reunion. We rented a house right on the beach. Funny story.....the house had what locals there call a "crows nest". It's a deck on the roof of the house. Anyway my cousin and I were probably 13 years old. We would sit up on the deck and signal my uncle(who was hiding below the benches) to whistle when ever cute girls would walk by. LOL!!!
Hearing some of your times for some races. You better watch it you guys are going to have to change the name of the podcast to Front of the Pack Podcast.
Stevie, I'm with you. I run outside. If I don't run outside I find an indoor track somewhere. I CAN NOT STAND TREADMILLS. In the winter I run outside(minus ice of course) all the way down to about 10 or 15 degrees. If it's colder than that i run on the indoor track. I've gotten the same looks you talk about.
Had my first try at an adventure race this weekend. UGH! Eleven 3 person teams had to run 15 miles, 2.5 mile "swim" and 40 mile bike. Had to find a total of 17 CP hidden through out the course. All this in 95 degree heat, 90% humidity, mud so thick that some places it came up to mid calf, and poison ivy, oak and sumac up the ying yang. HAD A BLAST!!! Didn't get to finish however because 15 miles into the bike my sister flipped over the front of her bike trying to miss some dogs she didn't see in the dark and dislocated her shoulder. Race over after 7 hours 30 minutes. USed the egels and they worked GREAT!! Highly recommended in high heat and humidity. I have a new respect for triathletes.
Now the E-fuel was a little bit different. It comes as a liquid concentrate. You mix one pack with 24 ounces of water. The taste of all of them was not very good but palatable. Very watered down. I havent tried to mix with less water yet. If you order the sample pack you get a 24 oz sports bottle to mix the drink up in. Although the taste was not very good this was an EXCEPTIONAL post run drink. 2 runs in a row(one of 6 miles the other 7 miles) i came home with muscle cramps and dizzy spells due to dehydration. The temps in the lower 80's, humidity in the 90's and not properly hydrating before hand. I would drink one 24 oz bottle of this stuff and SHAZZAM!!! within 2 hours I felt fine. No long term side effects from the dehydration. So in my opinion both products are pretty good for what you need them for.
Just wanted to give review of the E-gel and E-fuel from Cranksports. Got a sample pack for each product. The 2 sample packs together came with 12 "packs" of the efuel(3 of each flavor) and the Egel samples came with 16 gels(4 of each kind). The E-gel works really well if you can stomach gels. These packs are quite a bit larger than say the GU gel packs. There is a lot of gel in them(probably twice as much). So you better have some water with you to take these with. Taste was ok and they are a little bit more watery than say a GU gel pack. But man do they work. I went from on the verge of 11:00 minute miles to running 10:00-10:15 minute miles inside of 5 minutes after taking the gel. I talked to a customer service guy at crank sports and he said you definately need to take these with water, not a sports drink. They stated that this was do to the sugar content in sports drinks. If you take it with sports drink it will mess with the way that the glycogen will be stored and released to your muscles.
There are a lot of races out there that take you to some pretty neat places. I know there is a 10 miler called the Soldier Field 10 in Chicago where you finish on the 50 yard line of soldier field. They put your finish up on the jumbo tron and people are in the stands cheering and everything. There is one in Kentucky where you get to run around the track at Churchill Downs where they have the Kentucky Derby, and I know there is one in Daytona that you go around the Daytona 500 track. A friend and I have a bet to see who can run a 1/2 marathon in all 50 states first. So these are all races that I have on my list to do.
oh forgot to mention. One complaint about the show.....I did not realize until you talked about the beaver stadium run you were penn state fans......YUCK!!!!!!!!! Go Iowa HAWKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey guys love the show. My name is Sam Rupp and I just got done running my second 1/2 marathon on Saturday May 8th. The OneAmerica 500 Mini Marathon in Indianapolis, IN. What a classy race. The only thing I was disappointed about was the weather. It was 45 degrees at start time with wind blowing to 25 mph with gusts upwards of 30. And we were going into it for the first 6-7 miles or so. My goal time was to be between 2:15 and 2:20:00. Considering the wind though my time of 2:25:30 was not that big of a disappointment. It is a PR by just under 20 minutes. This race was incredible. The course winds through some nice neighborhoods and some not so nice neighborhoods. But the highlight was getting to run on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track where they hold the Indy 500. That was pretty cool. This was also the first race of any kind that I've run and there were spectators wall to wall on both sides of the course for the entire race. Some places were 2 or 3 rows deep. This gives you an incredible boost. Especially when they can see your name on your bib number and shout out "Your lookin good Sam!!", "Good Job Sam", etc, etc. Well keep up the good work. Thanks.
