His only motive for putting a halt to the incessant, coordinated character assassination is to decrease her potency. The tone deaf, near-sighted, self aggrandizing, self appointed members of the politically elite pundocracy are incapable of considering the possibility that their behavior toward Palin is wrong, or unfair, or mean spirited, or vile, or simply not nice. And that most Americans disapprove of that kind of behavior.
