I have never read the book. Someone here in this form has already called both the film and the book "Liberal Porn". In order for Lawyer Finch to be the hero, Tom has to die. In order for Ms. Lee / the film to have the outcome that makes Liberals "Feel Good" they have to find Tom guilty. Anything that destroys a minority Liberals love.

I posted the following on the TCM web site 3 years ago:

From time to time, TCM runs the feature, "How to read a movie". In it, they talk about how a film is made and how you can "read" a film like a book. Inthis post, I want to talk about an aspect of this film that isn't spoken of, the trial of Tom Robinson.

Tom,accused of sexual assault on the "White Trash" Mayella, is defended by the noble Atticus Finch. Lawyer Finch does a masterful job of defending his client by showing in court that due to an accident to his left arm, Tom couldn't have attacked Mayella. And then Atticus departs from the facts and starts to talk about the reason for this case is because Mayella "Tempted a Negro".

I contend that in his summation, Atticus Finch helped convict his client. Finch, did not keep the juries attention on the Facts! By appealing to their emotions, he made them come to the defense of a "white woman attacked by a N*****". at that point, Tom may as well have bolted from the courtroom and started his last desperate run for freedom. Finch helped convict his client.

If you accept my opinion, Maybe Atucus Finch isn't the hero we thought of.

I await your Opinions and comments.

Dear Mr. Avrech,
I have missed your illumination comments on "Big Hollywood" for a while.

Thanks for your talk about women's hats. A wonderful frame for a woman's face.

PS: I never noticed Norma Shearer legs, I am too captivated by her face. (I like thick legs too)

I still say about the Judds.......
"Momma has the looks (and still does), Sister 's (Wynona) Got the talent, Please tell me what did Ashley get?

She's not that attractive, she's no actress, she's a mouthy Liberal using her families fame to push her causes.

The Mann / DiNero line., "Have nothing in you life that you can't walk out on in 30 seconds flat......" has been my watch words as far as employment is concerned. In my life, I have worked for some truly awful people. They try to play mind games instead of getting the job done. Always be ready to walk! even if there isn't and other job waiting for you. Tough it out, Be a man and walk!

G*D I love this film!

I gave up such films after seeing "The Devil's Advocate" back in '97. At the end of the film, My question was. "Where was G*d ?" It seems that we must believe in supernatural Evil, and we as mere mortals are powerless to do anything about it.
The same thing happened in the last episode of "Star Trek Deep Space 9", Our hero saves the day (barely) But, without the help of the good supernatural beings that have guided his fate from the start of the series.
It isn't "Cool" to be good in either TV or the movies these days

When I visited "Historic Mt. Vernon", at the grave of the "Father of Our Country", A flock of teen agers came along . They were loud , and silly and being disrespectful kids at a grave site. As I was about to ask them to show some respect, I noticed that one of them had on a "Che" T-shirt.
It took a great deal of will to stop myself from kicking his sorry but into the Potomac.

I'm glad that I learned "Fire Discipline"
