Ditto. Since 90 percent of the species that ever lived went extinct somewhere along the line, it is amazingly arrogant and daft to think that we can save a species destined for extinction. Politics and money is at the heart of this plan, not science.
I see a way to make the WA school system world class. First, eliminate public sector unions. Second, collapse the hundreds of school districts into three or four regional districts. These two measures would free up more than enough revenue to attract the best and brightest away from the private sector. Third, retain the best and brightest existing teachers. Fourth, evaluate all teaches in some method as mentioned in this article. Fifth, release teachers failing to perform.
I fail to understand why teachers receive so much protection for mediocre performance. I also fail to understand why so much of the education budget goes to administration versus attaining a high standard of instruction. Why are high school seniors allowed to graduate without being able to read? This is absolutely ridiculous in our highly competitive world economy.
If anyone thinks that we can engineer a complex system, which those containers are, to last 10,000 years, then I have a certain bridge for sale to the highest bidder. Entire cultures, languages and terrain features will erupt and erode during that span. The collective 'we' may be clever, but we fall well short of foreseeing ten millenniums ahead. Nuclear waste is the most toxic set of substances ever realized, making containment of said waste the most important design challenge ever faced by us. The best containment designs we have now are really just cardboard compared to the real need. Don't believe me? Do some research into the topic and convince me otherwise.
Every time I read a new bit from the middle east, I see such wisdom and exemplary behavior. From the fatwas to the beheadings to the incidents like this. Come on people, if a cartoonist can offend your faith, then how strong was that faith to begin with?!

Bring a military person home and send this scumbag in place of the returnee. Some folks show such skill in random violence, let's make use of that skill. No need for basic training either, give them a fighting kit and drop them out of a plane and into the battle zone, about 30-40 miles past the front lines.
Ah yes, thug life. Why don't we draft thugs into the military and ship them off to war zones around the globe. They love to "bang" so much, let them do it in a war zone.
