The 'u' - 'a' letter difference doesn't matter. You may sometimes see or hear Hizbullah referred to as Hizballah.

Arabic letters are grouped into two: Shamsi ('of the Sun') and Kameri ('of the Moon'). As you can imagine, Shamsi letters are stonger and convert that 'al' into themselves, as in 'at-Tahrir', 'ar-Rahman', 'ash-Shams'. Whereas Kameri letters don't effect the 'al', as in 'al-Kamer', 'al-Watan', 'al-Maliq'.

While I side with you on some points, I'm afraid you're wrong about the violence before 1974. Below link is from a Turkish website, so words won't make sense but the pictures are from the sixties. There was sufficient terror accumulating decades before 1974 and Turkey used its guaranteer rights (later recognized by Greek courts, as I'd posted before on JW)

(In Turkey, some religious groups refuse to attend the Friday prayers, because the Imams' salaries are paid by the state, which has no religion.)

Uyghurs never accpted the Chinese rule. They were even affiliated to the Ottoman Empire for a while, but couldn't fight against China. And their annex by China didn't cause any sentiment in the Western world as did that of Tibet. A bunch of Muslims, after all! Who gives a damn?..
Of course, the natural resources of that piece of land is becoming more and more important and why should the Chinese extend to Africa, while it's within their hand's reach?
Another terrible thing happening in Kashgar is that they are tearing down the old houses, thousands of them. The Chinese are trying to wipe out the Turkish culture, from one of the best preserved old cities in central Asia. If Chinese have been around for 5000 years, well, Turks have been around for 3000. (Check the Chinese sources 10c BC.)

Turkish seculars are thinking the same way as you do, that is, expecting the army to put an end to this. Apparently, democracy is not doing any good, for the other side is reproducing faster...
As for the main subject, anyone can be arrested, if there's a claim against them; and planning a coup is a serious allegation. Nobody's untouchable, as should be the case in a democratic system, right? So, what's the matter?... Oh, I see; it's only the secular Kemalists that are being arrested. But, this should be no surprise, because the 'others' are in power, so, it's the secular Kemalists who are trying to put them down, through illegal means if necessary (since the legal ones are failing every 4 years).
Flippinheck,
The scarf is such a symbol, you can tell if the woman is secular or not from half a mile. But, what are you going to do about the men (unless bearded)?...

“I, Sultan Mehmet Khan the Conqueror, hereby declare to the whole world that the Bosnian Franciscans granted this edict are under my protection. And I command that:
No one shall disturb or harm these people and their churches! They shall live in peace in my state. These people, who have become immigrants, shall have security and liberty. They may return to their monasteries which are located on the borders of my state.
No one from my empire -- notables, viziers, clerks or my maids -- will dishonor or harm them!
No one shall insult, put in danger or attack the lives, properties and churches of these people! People and property these people bring from their own countries have the same rights.
By issuing this edict, I swear on my sword by the holy name of Allah, who created the Heavens and the Earth; His messenger Mohammed and the 124,000 prophets that came before him that no one from my citizens will react or behave in a way that opposes this edict!”

In 1971, the United Nations published a translation of the document in all of the official languages of the UN so that all of you guys could read and understand.
Quite different from the approach the Westerners took when they invaded and colonized the lands all around the world, eh?
BTW, you weren't so sensitive when the Turks in Bulgaria were being forced to change their Turkish/Islamic names and there was great religious oppression during the time of Jivkov in the late 80's. Another example of the double standards of the Western World?...
