What is truly scary is the thought that there are Americans that would want to vote for someone like Obama. Not too surprising as we have endured 4 years of Reid/Pelosi. Truly terrifying!

Furthermore, Sarah Palin did something more far-reaching for her state and more fiscally responsible than Mitt Romney can ever dream about. 1) She took on Big Oil and forced them to drill on their leases, threatening to sue them. 2) She re-configured the oil profits tax: it incentivized them to drill more, but didn't punish them when profits were down due to lower prices, WIN WIN; and 3) She opened up bidding on the largest private infrastructure project in history, a $40 billion natural gas pipeline that will create thousands of jobs and trillions of cubic feet of clean, safe, reliable energy to fuel America's growing need for domestic supplies. Under her leadership, the project finally got off the ground without being corrupted by the influence of Big Oil lobbyists, and it should be completed by 2019. What will be the fate of Romneycare in 2019? I doubt his "legacy" will be quite so well regarded over time.

But hunky wonky will no doubt appeal to the Washington establishment crowd. I'll take Palin.

Um, not only did Palin balance the budget, she left Alaska with a $2 billion surplus in the permanent fund, and a $250 million actual budget surplus. So, what the hell are you talking about Mr. Romney Pants?

Sarah prevented her legislature from going kookoo with spending while oil prices were high, forced them to forward-fund education, and she vetoed $500 million in their pet projects. Obviously, she was very *popular" with the Juneau crowd ... not.

Back to the topic at hand: even though we are told that Sarah Palin is a crazy right-winger, if you look at her record you see that she actually governed in a manner quite detached from her personal beliefs.

I'm a recovering atheist and I completely concur. Palin's record screams out LIBERTARIAN, from her refusal to enact a ban on same-sex couple benefits, to her rejection of an attempt to close the bars early. Funny how she's getting flack now from her own party for endorsing libertarian Rand Paul and moderate conservative John McCain.

Hear that libbies? Palin is just too liberal. Ha! Or maybe she's smarter than you think: she's the ONLY person who can unite the libertarian, moderate, and socon wings of the GOP.

Well, a CNN survey this week revealed that Tea Partiers were more educated than the public at large.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/02/17/tea.party....

"Nearly three-quarters of Tea Party activists attended college, compared to 54 percent of all Americans."

Your post suggested that Palin appeals to the unreasonable folks and is "polarizing" to the more "reasonable" among us. I submit this is a myth. Smart people are more likely to recognize that a $14 trillion debt is bad, and that Obama is not going to be able to pay our mortgages from his "stash" indefinitely. In other words: conservatives are smart by definition.

Um, wr1 ... You're spouting nonsense. Tanning bed? You mean the one she purchased herself? Wow, that's all you got? Per diem? You mean the per diem she was perfectly entitled to by law (and cheaper than an Anchorage hotel while the governor's mansion was being repaired)? Oh, and the RNC clothes. Yes, the clothes she didn't ask for, didn't purchase, and didn't keep. Even the NY Times reported on this ... finally, interviewing the NY designer hired by the McCain team, the one who bought the clothes for Palin because they didn't think her clothes were "good enough."

Epic fail, wr1.

You mean the reasonable conservatives who ran up the federal debt that Obama's complaining about now? Those "conservatives"? The ones who bailed out their Wall Street cronies? Those reasonable conservatives?

I appreciate your candor about the kooks on both sides, but I'd like to propose a slightly different scenario about what makes Palin scary to the so-called "reasonable" people. Palin is fiscally conservative to her CORE. I've met her. I've heard her speak in person, and what screams out is her innate libertarianism. Growing up in the last frontier she is all about self-reliance. At every turn in her career she has resisted the cushy perks of government office and rejected increased government involvement in people's lives. That scares the ruling class and their parasitic dependents at the Big Government teet. She is an existential threat to their status quo.

So basically you're looking for Jesus to come down again and run for president?

Excellent article ... I trust your expertise on this, but I would peg the "Sarah horror" flick as one that involves an ordinary person suddenly becoming an ax murderer. Sarah does seem so ordinary on the outside. I think people have to either mock her as a dumb rube or an evil genius. How do those two caricatures reside in one body?
