Umm yeah this is happening in Egypt, "their country".
The Grand Mufti believes social networking sites like Twitter are not suitable to Muslims because it's a platform for spreading lies and making accusations. So by extension the paper, pen, newspapers, telephones and the internet are also unsuitable. It's becoming quite clear that Islam desperately needs to finds a way to reform, liberalize and reconcile its place in people's lives. The consequences of it's failures means it will continue on as a draconian belief system lead by awkward (at best), myopic people. In all of the discussions about Islam there is little discussion about the peace it purports to espouse; rather we are inundated with a torrent of stories about honour killings, medieval lashings, censorship of artists, sexual repression and an endless series of fatwas that challenge natural law and/or common sense.
Yep, I am a Copt! It is unfortunate that Egypt is heading down this path. It doesn't arguer well for the future of Christians in the Middle East.
As an American of Egyptian heritage, I recall seeing photos of the women in my family wearing contemporary clothing whilst at the beach, at home or in school. The current religious conservatism in Egypt comes as a result of years of indoctrination by the Muslim Brotherhood and populist sentiments against the corruption of regimes seen as being aligned with western governments and therefor western values. The country is going to have a difficult time coming back from the failed political, economic and cultural state that it's currently in.
Madonna has never been my favorite performer, but I like the fact that she is taking her performance seriously. The half time show is a Super Bowl tradition and to the extent that she's putting in a lot of time preparing for it tells me that she respects what it means to the fans watching at home.
Say what you will about her politics or behavior, but the woman is an icon.
It's unfortunate, but not unexpected that Jewish pilgrims would be denied access to Egypt given the treatment of Coptic Christians in Egypt. Despite being descendants of ancient Egypt, they are routinely denied the right to build or repair churches in their native land, a clear affront to natural law and free will.
Egypt is unsafe for tourists, it's unsafe for non-Muslims and it's on the road to theocracy. Watch for further marginalization of the Christian minority in Egypt, a rapid repudiation of the Camp David Peace Accord and widespread violence against secular and non-Muslims in the country.
The Muslim Brotherhood is not a moderate Islamic political movement like the State Department is currently making them out to be. The Obama administration has ceded Egypt to radicals. With a large standing army the country armed with US hardware the country will be a hugely destabilizing in the region.
The Muslim Brotherhood is about to unwind the only good thing President Carter accomplished in office, the "Camp David Accord". As someone who has spent a tremendous amount of time in Cairo, I can tell you that this is not a harbinger of good things to come from the Middle East.
It's amazing to me that the Egyptian people would knowingly vote against their own interests and liberty by supporting the Islamists.
For a country like Egypt, that is dependent on tourism, to vote for people who admittedly find the Pyramids and antiquities of ancient Egypt to be indecent displays of paganism is foolish and will ultimately lead to more instability in the country.
Very sad.
How is that the world can watch socialism fail time and again and still not be convinced that it's an unsustainable paradigm? Socialism produces nothing and destroys creativity.
So, Nancy Pelosi's donors don't want her to quit? What is she doing for those donors that is so critical to their interests? Who are donors? What about her constituents? Ostensibly, they're Democrat loyalists, but how do they feel about her serving in Congress at the behest of her donors and not necessarily her district? So, deconstructing her statements one could infer that Mrs. Pelosi doesn't serve at the pleasure of her constituents but rather the 1% she so frequently vilifies.
Too true. Ron Paul is a top tier candidate with a fervent base. To be sure, Paul isn't an establishment favorite, but this is a very anti-establishment year. I think the Congressman is a real life patriot with a straight forward honesty that I really appreciate. I'm not sure he's my guy, but he's certainly got my attention. By the way, is AFP a
minor news service? They're certainly not Reuters or AP.
