Other guys have had pretty big home/road splits before... sometimes it just happens. Beltran has pretty big splits this yr himself. Maybe it is Citifield with Wright, or maybe its just sample size/ a coincidence. His numbers were actually ok at home until the last homestand where he had a bad 20 AB or so stretch and brought his home average down about 20 points. Whether it was Citi causing his slump or not is way too early to tell. Splits like that can go up and down pretty qiuck at this point in the season b/c you're dealing with a relatively small number of ABs.
And kudos to the original article. The HR Derby nonsense has been driving me nuts.
Was he effected a bit mentally by the past collapses? Probably. But no longer viable on a NY stage? I think that's a bit extreme. Yes his home numbers are off from the norm thus far this yr, but this season with this team there is tons of pressure to win a play well each game wherever it is - home or road. And overall while its a odd season with the excess of Ks and the lack of HR power, its still a good season. He's second in the league in hitting and OBP, has solid RBI numbers, has been good in "clutch" RISP situations. He can certainly be a player that thrives on the Mets and in NY for a long time.
Wright did the HR Derby in 2006, not 2007. And the year following the Derby... 2007... was his best year to date (should have won the MVP that yr). He is striking out at a much higher rate this particular season and that needs to stop, but his K/PA rate had actually gone down a bit every season prior to this one. So it is absolutely not true that the HR Derby ruined him. The HR Derby wouldn't have just suddenly started effecting his K rate 3 years later. He is not swinging for the fences every time, he’s actually been driving the ball the other way just as much as he did earlier in his career. The stats of % of balls hit he other way are right in line with the rest of his career. He got away from that a little bit last yr, but this yr he’s back to driving the ball the other way just as often as he always has. He’s been hitting balls in the gaps just fine, he’s actually on pace to set a new career high in doubles. The only thing that is different this yr is the lack of HR. His doubles and triples are up, but the HR numbers are down.
LOL at Wright not taking it personally when the Mets lose. If anything I think he takes the losses too personally...he'd be better if he chilled out a bit and got over things quicker. He's always the guy saying he needs to play better, the team needs to play better, etc, its not like he acts like these games don't matter.
Manny is only hitting .222 with RISP...he'd fit right in!
Wright is not a dead pull hitter. And HoJo has been his coach for a number of years both in the majors and minors when he was at his best. I highly doubt he is now suddenly giving Wright bad advice and messing him up
First of all its Down...not Downs. And the team started hitting much better (especially Wright) soon after HoJo took over in 2007.
Wright doesn't run THAT much...at least not much more than Beltran. And if anything I think guys would run less in front of the big bats then behind them. That said I still think Wright should hit 3rd...not a huge deal if they switch them, but chances are pretty good Wright is going to lead the team in OBP...and I'd rather that be used in front of Delgado and Beltran than wasted on the bottom half of the lineup
Its to early to really judge that kind of thing. He also only has 3 steals, and only 1 2b and 1 3b...so while he might be getting on base more, he might not be getting into scoring position quite as often.
Wright was great in 2007. Especially down the stretch.
