The 'patience' point caught my eye. I often think that it is easy to get impatient with creative people because they don't seem to focus in early enough. Creative people like to expand the options, explore before deciding on a route and that process tends to take more time at the beginning but they often get to an answer much quicker than being focused too early and having to back track or repair damage. They are also more resistant to doing the same thing twice!

Deborah: thanks for taking the time to comment. I love your example. It is a perfect one for showing how commenting on the process and outcomes rather than the people is less judgemental. It also puts me in mind of one of the principles of non-violent communication where even compliments are deemed to be judgemental and I think I understand that even better now. When you say to someone they are "x" and that is a good thing then they become fearful of losing that positive label and that sets them up to fail. Whereas in your example, there is a choice for your kids and no knock back if they don't do it all the time just the promise of knowing how they can make you happy.

I hope you drop by again soon.

John, thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I appreciate your forthright views which I could easily argue myself. Equally, credentials and standards are designed as a filter or a barrier to entry and therefore they can indeed equate to less variety etc. That is what they are designed to be - a barrier to entry.

If we bear that in mind then we have a better chance of minimising the risk of making the mistakes that other professions have made in the past, the main one being creating a bureaucratic system that costs a lot to administer. By way of example: an insurer told me recently that if mediators were regulated you would likely add two noughts to the professional indemnity premium cost. That in itself would exclude a large number of potentially very good mediators.

Adam, thank you for taking the time to comment.

I always encourage people to see a joint statement as a compelling demonstration of strength. The decision to mediate takes courage and finding an agreement is a great achievement so why not take all the benefits?

I couldn't agree more Tammy! It is perfect for projects, reorganization, resource planning, long running disputes where there are many stakeholders. I never cease to be delighted at the imagination and creativity generated by this process. As Harrison Owen often says: the planet has been self-organizing for billions of years and rather well.

Thank you Tammy! Which metaphor did you like best? Catching jelly with an egg cup or putting handcuffs on an octopus? They came to mind as I heard two different takes of the problem from the class. A very good indication of the variety of learning styles in the room, I thought.

The output was set at +18dB which is the normal top end level so I can see why it might not work if you had it set to 0! Thank goodness you knew where to look. Well done. Hope you enjoy.

The link to the Quicktime version is now fixed. If anyone else has a problem with the volume can you let me know please. The output was fine when I edited it but if others have a problem I will recalibrate.
