I think what you're missing is that in many cases the people who undergo these conversions hadn't given much thought to their beliefs before their respective epiphanies. That's why there's the old saying, "If you haven't been a liberal in your 20s you had no heart; if you hadn't become conservative by the time you're in your 30s you have no brain."

I feel old. Reading this post the only thing I could think of was, "The Work Bee wasn't in the original series!" And that's when I realized nowadays (it's an old people word, look it up) most people's exposure to "Trek" probably started during the early movie phase anyway.

The thought of the 2012 campaign gearing up again already almost makes me wish Obama would cancel all future elections. Almost. Before Republicans go off again jumping on the bandwagon for the magic woman or non-white they think can beat Obama in 2012, they need to step back and ask themselves:

"If this person were a 50-something white male Protestant, would I be anywhere near as enthusiastic about supporting him?"

That said, Mike Huckabee *is* a white male Protestant and I wouldn't vote for him even if he were running against an actual clone of Adolf Hitler. He's a Big-Government Spendocrat in Religious Right clothing and would do far more damage to the GOP brand than anybody I can think of.

I think he's right, but as usual not for the reasons he gives. If we Americans weren't cowards about race this reincarnation of Herbert Hoover wouldn't be destroying our economy with this Porkzilla "stimulus" bill.

Probably the other guy would be doing it, but still...
