I'm reading thru the OT as well right now, chronologically. I'm in Ezekiel, but I have the same questions. I asked my (OT scholar) husband about it and he gave me some good perspective: I AM a person who lives thousands of years after this happened. My body of knowledge brings Christ crucified as I read about Moses. Its like a curtain on a stage is slowly opening to reveal the whole stage - we see more now than they did in the OT. We can't get rid of that knowledge, just like you can't get rid of the vision of the curtain being wider rather than just a slit.
I can't answer your exact questions, but perspective helps to get your mind around certain 'why's'.

omigosh nobody cooks on Sunday night?? I thought i was the only bad mother? The only reason I did a load of laundry and got the kids to bed on time is that they would tell the teacher on Monday morning if i did't.

My kids loved Sunday nights for that reason. They could eat just about anything and get away with it.
