Mark - thanks for reading and glad you enjoyed the article. It's a film that was quietly put away, which is a shame because it has plenty to say about the human condition. Hopefully the DVD release will see its commonly regarded status as a curio be reevaluated.

Ha! Cib, thanks for reading. Not at all? I can't remember someone having that harsh a reaction to it.

You're absolutely right, the purple dialogue between Bond and Vesper is for the most part pretty awful. The poker stuff really worked for me, however... but then that's coming from someone who's NEVER played the game, so perhaps I'm one of the blindfolded droves. Really, for me, this was great stuff until they threw it all away in the final act.

Hey Freshtonitone - thanks for the comment! I would tend to agree: Rushdie spends more time being a cranky highbrow than actually producing quality work himself.

Mike, thanks for the comment. Really, in the modern age it's a completely media driven phenomenon - nobody in the actual industry (other than the nouvelle vague) has ever followed it, least of all the studio-controlled Hollywood scene. Unfortunately, what seemed to almost start out as a form of media short hand ('Polanski's Chinatown' etc) has grown to the point where public perception is that the director does a whole lot more than they actually do in the production process.
