I actually got to see a small test screening for this film.. It was pretty kick ass. They were still doing sound stuff as they were in post production, but it has a cool story, and didn't steal/lean on the original really at all. Its about Peter Fonda's family, and their relationships.. They even have a quick bit with a teenage Wyatt (Peter Fonda's Character).. Pretty cool Vietnam stuff. I'd actually say its more a commentary on today's America than the 60's though.. Amazing ride sequences.. I think the fans will be pleasantly surprised.
