Another keyboard commando, telling everybody what he would do if he was over there. Enlist and volunteer for combat duty in Afghanistan, or shut up.
Actually, the spitting hippie is a discredited urban legend. My Vietnam veteran father was never harassed by any hippies and in fact had some hippie friends who knew he was in Vietnam and had no problems with it. I'll tell you who did discriminate against Vietnam veterans, though... corporate America, who refused to hire "crazy" Vietnam vets. My father couldn't get a job until he took all references to the USMC and Vietnam off his resume.
You don't have to be a leftist to be against what these guys did, and many veterans are liberals and Democrats. My 90 year old Guadalcanal veteran grandfather is a life-long Democrat and union member. Go tell him he's a traitor and see how far up your ass he jams his cane.
I spent 4 years in the military, buttercup...how about you? Enlist in the Marines if you want to kill terrorists so badly.
What exactly are you doing to "get behind the troops" you chickenhawk coward? Why don't you enlist and volunteer for duty in Afghanistan? Pusscakes.
There was a time when conservatives were skeptical of nation building, empire, the military draft, excessive defense budgets, foreign entanglements, etc. on constitutional and fiscal grounds. During the Vietnam era, in an effort to get the anti-hippie and anti-war protester vote, the GOP decided to become the military party and now it seems that every time a president (well a Republican one anyway) decides to go to send troops somewhere, conservatives totally forget that they are supposed to be the small government party and become the biggest cheerleaders for the Pentagon, which may I remind everybody is the largest government office building in the nation if not the world. I would also remind you all that defense is the biggest part of the federal budget. No real conservative can support this craziness.
I, a conservative since 1984, a Republican for almost 20 years (I'm an independent now), a Reagan voter, and a veteran, think that what these Marines did was disgusting. They should be punished for it and shame on any conservative who thinks that what they did was OK.
Boy, the chickenhawks are really clucking away! I'll restate this another way: I'm not as opposed to those of you who are supporting these pissing Marines as much as I am by those of you, like Dana, who have expressed a desire to do the same. As I pointed out above, if you are between 18 and 42, are in good health, and have a high school diploma, you can join the Marine Corps and get your wish. So, call your nearest recruiter and have at it. If you don't want to do that, then shut up about wanting to piss on dead Taliban.
When you are in the military and wearing the uniform you represent all of America. Nowhere in the military is it taught that urinating on the dean bodies of the enemy is in any way acceptable. Those of us who actually served know this; while those who didn't would not know this. (Of course, I can't think of any other place in American life where it is taught that urinating on a dead body is OK.)
A chickenhawk is somebody who advocates for war and then personally avoids serving. Certainly, one need not be a veteran to voice an opinion on war but it does make one look really hypocritical to think that a certain war is important, while not personally enlisting to fight in it. This is at least as bad as Michael Moore ripping on corporations and the rich while owning millions of dollars of stock in those same corporations. As I wrote above, the basic requirements to enlist are not all that high and the vast majority of Americans age 18 to 35 (or 42; they raised the age a few years ago) do in fact meet the basic requirements. In Dana's case, she wished she could have joined the Marines and I simply pointed out that as a healthy educated 33 year old she most certainly could.
By the way, speaking of war, unless our next president is Ron Paul it looks like we will be at war with Iran and since our troop levels are so low I do believe that you younger folks are going to find out about the military's enlistment procedures the hard way. Enjoy getting your certified letter from Selective Services!
Because, Erik, in this case many people who find this behavior on the part of our servicemen and women acceptable did not serve. Had they done so, they would understand just how unprofessional it is. Following 9/11, enlisting in the military was the one thing that virtually any 18 to 35 year old, reasonable fit American with a high school diploma could have done and yet the number of these folks who claimed to "support the troops" who did not enlist was disgusting.
One need not be a liberal or a Democrat to be disgusted by this piggish behavior. How many of you people who are supporting this are veterans, like I am? Dana, if you really wish that you could join these Marines, may I point out that you are 33, healthy, fit, and educated. The USMC would love you! Enlist...here's a link:
